5 Best Free AI Image Upscalers in 2026 (I Tested Them All)

I spent a week testing every free AI image upscaler I could find. Here's what actually works, what doesn't, and which one I'd pick depending on what you need.

I built an image upscaler, so naturally I've tried every other one out there. Not to steal ideas — to understand what users actually need. Over the past week I ran the same 512px test image through every free AI upscaler I could find.

Here's what I learned.

What I was testing for

Three things matter when you upscale an image: how sharp the result looks, how fast it processes, and how annoying the tool is to use. A lot of upscalers nail one of these and completely botch the others.

I tested with a 512x512 photo of a street scene — buildings, text on signs, a person in the background. This kind of image exposes weaknesses fast because it has edges, fine text, and skin tones all at once.

The 5 tools that actually work

1. Upscayl (Best for privacy)

Upscayl is open source and runs locally on your computer. That means your images never leave your machine. If you're working with client photos or anything sensitive, this matters.

The results are genuinely good. It uses Real-ESRGAN under the hood, same as many online tools, but you get the full quality without compression. The downside is you need a decent GPU. On my M1 Mac a 2x upscale takes about 8 seconds. On an older laptop without a dedicated GPU, expect 30+ seconds.

Good for: People who care about privacy, batch processing, offline use. Not good for: Quick one-off upscales, people who don't want to install software.

2. Image Upscaler Free (Yes, that's mine)

I'm going to be honest about my own tool here. Image Upscaler Free runs Real-ESRGAN in the cloud. You upload, it processes, you download. No account needed for basic use.

Where it does well: simplicity. There's no learning curve. Upload an image, pick 2x or 4x, wait about 20 seconds, done. The quality is solid for web use — product photos, social media images, blog thumbnails.

Where it falls short compared to Upscayl: you're limited to a few free upscales per day, and the maximum input size is 2048px. If you need to upscale a 4000px image, this isn't the right tool.

Good for: Quick online upscales, no installation needed, works on any device. Not good for: Huge images, batch processing, users who need unlimited free usage.

3. Pixelcut (Best for clean results)

Pixelcut surprised me. The output is noticeably cleaner than most competitors, especially on product photos with white backgrounds. I think they've fine-tuned their model specifically for e-commerce use cases.

The free tier gives you a few upscales per day without watermarks, which is generous. Interface is clean and fast. My only complaint is the maximum upscale is 4x — some competitors offer 8x or even 16x.

Good for: Product photos, e-commerce, clean minimal images. Not good for: Photos with complex textures, anything requiring more than 4x.

4. Topaz Labs Free Web Upscaler (Best quality, with caveats)

Topaz has the best AI model in the business, period. Their results are consistently sharper and more natural-looking than anything else I've tested. The free web version lets you upscale up to 8x.

The catch: it's slow. Processing took over a minute for my test image. And the free tier has limits that aren't clearly documented — I hit a wall after about 10 upscales and got pushed toward their $99/year desktop app.

Good for: When quality is the only thing that matters. Not good for: Speed-sensitive workflows, people who need truly free.

5. iLoveIMG (Best for no-hassle bulk use)

iLoveIMG doesn't use credits or daily limits. You can upscale as many images as you want, 2x or 4x, completely free. The quality isn't as impressive as the others on this list — results tend to be a bit soft — but for bulk work where "good enough" is fine, it's unbeatable.

Good for: Bulk upscaling, no limits, simple workflow. Not good for: Professional-quality output, detail-critical work.

Which one should you use?

It depends on one question: what do you value most?

If you want the best quality and don't mind installing software, use Upscayl. It's free, open source, and processes locally.

If you need a quick upscale right now in your browser without signing up for anything, try Image Upscaler Free. I built it for exactly that use case.

If you're upscaling product photos for your online store, Pixelcut is probably your best bet.

If quality trumps everything and you can wait, Topaz produces the best results.

If you just need to batch-upscale a bunch of images and don't care about maximum sharpness, iLoveIMG is the practical choice.

There's no single "best" tool. There's only the right one for what you're doing right now.
